Feb 18, 2011 – Westchester NY resident, author, and guest speaker Matthew Cossolotto, creator of “Make A Promise Day,” today called on President Obama, the nation’s governors, and other governmental leaders to proclaim May 4th “Make A Promise Day.”

“A promise is like a goal on steroids,” Cossolotto said.  “A promise also combines the positive attributes of hope and change, two concepts that President Obama has warmly embraced.  Now more than ever we need to harness the power of making and keeping promises in this country to turn around our economic situation and to get the country moving again.  Proclaiming every May 4th to be ‘Make A Promise Day’ is an inspiring step in the right direction.  We should bring this positive message to schools, businesses, and government agencies around the country.  That’s exactly what widespread adoption of ‘Make A Promise Day’ will do.  I’m proud that Yorktown was the first jurisdiction to adopt a ‘Make A Promise Day’ resolution. This is only the beginning.  As I’ve said before: Today Yorktown, tomorrow the world!  Now it’s time for President Obama, Governor Cuomo and other leaders to issue similar proclamations.”

Following is the full text of the resolution, which was adopted unanimously by the Yorktown Town Board on February 15, 2011.

MAKE A PROMISE DAY (May 4th) Resolution

Whereas, Make a Promise Day is the only unofficial “holiday” dedicated to personal empowerment, goal achievement and integrity enhancement;

Whereas, Make A Promise Day encourages individuals to turn important goals into heartfelt promises thereby increasing the probability of reaching those goals;

Whereas, celebrating Make A Promise Day will have the effect of enhancing accountability, personal responsibility and integrity;

Whereas, the Town Board recognizes the value of highlighting the power of making and keeping promises on the part of local students, teachers, community organizations, businesses and political leaders;

Now therefore be it resolved, that the Town Board of Yorktown hereby designates and proclaims May 4th of 2011 and each year thereafter to be “Make A Promise Day” and encourages local organizations and individual members of the community to celebrate “Make A Promise Day” in a manner they deem to be suitable and appropriate.

Cossolotto sums up the power of making a promise with these four, mantra-like sentences:  “Make A Promise.  Keep Your Word.  Change Your Life.  Transform The World.”  He launched a motivational program on Twitter called “A Promise A Day:  30 Days to a Promising Future.”  People can receive the daily tweets by following http://www.twitter.com/makeapromiseday.  The entire 30-day program is also available for purchase on http://www.ThePodiumPro.com.

By way of background, Cossolotto made a promise to his mother on her deathbed that he would finish writing a book he had been discussing with her, get it published, and dedicate it to her memory. The resulting book, complete with Cossolotto’s dedication to his mother, is HabitForce! How to Kick the Habits of FAILURE and Adopt the Habits of SUCCESS. Signed copies of HabitForce! can be ordered via Cossolotto’s website: http://www.ThePodiumPro.com.

Cossolotto’s dedication to his mother in HabitForce! reads:

In loving memory of my mother,

Virginia Hope (Ludascher) Butler

I did it, Mom! Finally. I can honestly say that this book would never have been completed had I not made that promise to you at home in Gasquet, California, a few weeks before you passed away. This vividly demonstrates the power of making a promise, especially to your mother!

Cossolotto’s forthcoming book – I Promise! The Two Magic Words That Could Change Your Life and Transform The World – features a foreword by Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. In his foreword to Cossolotto’s book Canfield writes:

When Matthew first told me about the heartfelt promise he made to his mother and that he was launching a special day called “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th, I was hooked. You could say he had me at “I promise.”…

Contributing the foreword to this book and being associated with Matthew’s inspiring “Make-A-Promise” project is totally aligned with my life’s purpose. I applaud Matthew for collecting and celebrating these uplifting stories about promises made and promises kept.

John Assaraf, best-selling author of Having It All, wrote this about Cossolotto’s “Make A Promise” project: “I agree completely with that there is something uniquely powerful about making a promise that goes beyond traditional goal-setting.”

Here are a few prominent examples of the power of making a promise:

Nancy Brinker, author of Promise Me and founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, promised her sister and breast cancer victim Suzy that she would help find a cure.

Bill Clinton made a promise to Chelsea that he would watch his diet and take care of his health.

Oprah Winfrey made a promise to Nelson Mandela that she would build a school for girls in South Africa.

NBC’s Al Roker made a promise to his dying father that he would deal with his weight issues.

As a guest speaker, Cossolotto offers several Personal Empowerment Programs (PEPTalks) to a variety of audiences including schools and colleges, corporations, government agencies, and nonprofits. Here are the titles of his top three PEPTalks:

The Power of Making a Promise: Make A Promise. Keep Your Word. Change Your Life. Transform The World.

The Joy of Speaking: Turn Stage Fright Into Stage Delight and Speak Your Way to the Peak

Success Is An Inside Job: Avoid FAILURE Traps, Get on the SUCCESS Track, and Reach Your Peak Personal Potential

Yorktown resident, author, and guest speaker Matthew Cossolotto, creator of “Make A Promise Day,” today applauded the Yorktown Town Board for adopting a resolution designating May 4, 2011 and every year thereafter to be “Make A Promise Day.”

“This is a very big step forward,” Cossolotto said. “Yorktown is the first jurisdiction to adopt a ‘Make A Promise Day’ resolution. But I hope and expect this is only the beginning. I want to thank the Yorktown Board for supporting this very positive and inspiring initiative. Now I’d like to see Westchester County adopt a similar resolution, along with New York State and other communities and states around the country. But the power of making a promise need not be restricted to the U.S. I hope other countries will adopt similar resolutions. My attitude is: Today Yorktown, tomorrow the world! So I encourage supporters of ‘Make A Promise Day’ to ask their local, state, and national authorities to adopt a similar ‘Make A Promise Day’ resolution.”

Following is the full text of the resolution, which was adopted unanimously by the Yorktown Town Board on February 15, 2011.

“I Promise To Always Make You Proud of Me.” An Inspiring Holiday Message From Todd Newton

Todd Newton – Popular TV Host, Inspirational Speaker, and Certified Life Coach – Reveals Two Heartfelt Promises That Changed His Life and Encourages Others to Make A Promise Today!

Appearing on “What’s Your Promise?,” Newton tells host Matthew Cossolotto:  “What a great mission you’re on, my friend … I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to be part of this Make-A-Promise campaign.”

Yorktown Heights, NY — December 24, 2010 — In a guest appearance on Matthew Cossolotto’s interview program “What’s Your Promise?,” popular TV host Todd Newton revealed two heartfelt promises that had a profound impact on his life.

Newton has been the host of E! Entertainment Television’s red carpet coverage of  various awards programs including the Academy Awards.  He is also known to millions of television viewers for his work on the Game Show Network, the Travel Network, and CBS.  This year, Newton has been traveling the world as the host of the Travel Network’s World’s Wildest Game Shows.

The first promise Newton discussed in detail was the one he made to his grandmother, Eleanor Kruse (“Nana”), who performed as a comedienne in the St. Louis area during World War II.  After describing his Nana as someone who inspired and encouraged him and as the most important person in his life when he was growing up, Newton recounted the day he went to visit his grandmother in the hospital when she was terminally ill.  He could see that she was fading quickly.  He knew this would be the last conversation he would have with her.  So he leaned in close to speak to her and the following words came out spontaneously and from the heart.

“Nana … I promise to always make you proud of me.”

Talking about this promise some 17 years later is still an emotional experience for Newton, who became choked up during the interview.

Later in the interview, Newton made the following statement about the promise he made to Nana:  “This was the most important thing I have ever done, or said, or ever will commit to in my life.  It literally has changed my life for the better.”

The second promise Newton talked about during the program was made at the time of the birth of his two children.

Newton said he made the following promise to his children:  “I promise I will always be here to guide you and protect you.”

Toward the end of the interview, Newton underscored that these two promises have had the most profound effect on his life.  He said he has tried to live up to both promises every single day.

Until January 22, 2011, listeners can access the entire interview by dialing this telephone playback number (1-218-486-8703) followed by this access code (358649).  There is no charge to listen to the nearly one-hour program but callers must pay for the long distance phone charge.  If you visit http://www.ThePodiumPro.com and sign up for  Matthew Cossolotto’s free “PEPTalks” email updates, you’ll receive excerpts from the interview online in the next few weeks.

“In our family, we don’t break promises,” Says Meiying’s Father in The Karate Kid (2010)

 Matthew Cossolotto, Creator of “Make A Promise Day” (May 4th) and Former Aide to House Speaker Jim Wright and Congressman Leon Panetta, Cites Promises Made in The Karate Kid in Announcing His New eBook and Keynote Presentation Titled – “The Power of Making a Promise: Make a Promise. Keep Your Word. Change Your Life”

New York—July 13, 2010—Pointing out that the hit movie The Karate Kid (2010) underscores the life-changing power of making a promise, “Make a Promise Day” creator Matthew Cossolotto announced the launch of his new ebook and keynote presentation both titled: “The Power of Making a Promise: Make A Promise. Keep Your Word. Change Your Life.”

In the 2010 The Karate Kid remake, the young central characters, Dre and Meiying, exchange heartfelt promises. Dre promises to attend Meiying’s audition and Meiying promises to be there when Dre competes in the big Kung Fu tournament. But Meiying’s father disapproves of his daughter’s friendship with Dre and forbids her to see him again. The father later relents after learning about Meiying’s promise to Dre. “In our family, we don’t break promises,” explains the father.

“That’s a great example of the power of making a promise,” comments Cossolotto. “A promise injects an unstoppable emotional commitment that compels promise makers to follow through, to keep their word. What Meiying’s father says about his family — they don’t break promises — should apply to a compnay, a government agency, a nonprofit, as well as individuals.  Your integrity is on the line with a promise. Failure is not an option. So I strongly encourage people to take advantage of this power by turning goals into promises. A promise is like a goal on steriods. It’s a powerful way to get unstuck, to break free from disempowering habits and mindsets and jumpstart your personal change journey. That’s what ‘Make A Promise Day’ and The Power of Making a Promise are all about.”

Cossolotto knows all about the irresistible power of making a promise. He made a promise to his dying mother (Virginia Hope Butler) that he would finish writing a book he had been discussing with her, get it published, and dedicate it to her memory. The resulting book is The Real F Word: The 7 FAILURE Traps of Highly Disempowered People (and what to do about them). The Power of Making a Promise ebook and signed copies of The Real F Word are both available via www.TheEmpowermentPro.com.   His article – “The Power of a Promise” – was published in Personal Excellence magazine (June 2010).

Cossolotto’s positive message is catching on. He’s been interviewed on numerous programs recently including: Norm Lapalme’s “Million Dollar Idea Show,” Doug Stephan’s “Good Day,” Rick Barber’s “After Midnight,” Gus Lloyd’s “Seize The Day,” Nora Klaver’s “Brainstorms,” Bill Horan’s “Secrets of Success,” Jack Ebling (WLIS-AM), and Kellie Fuller (KVON-AM), among many others. Cossolotto is scheduled to appear on Bruce Owens’ “Good Morning Hudson Valley” on July 20, 2010, and on “Read My Lips Live!” with Bonnie D. Graham on August 9, 2010.

Should Tiger Woods Make A Promise to His Mother on Mother’s Day?

Maybe it’s none of my business, but I can’t help thinking that maybe … just maybe … Tiger Woods should consider making a promise to his mother today.  I don’t want to tell Tiger exactly what he should promise, but it should be very specific and very direct.  He should make a promise that puts his integrity on the line and doesn’t leave any wiggle room for excuses or fudging.

The value of making a promise to someone you care about is the clarity it offers.  It’s like a poker game when you decide to go “all in.”  With a promise, you’re all in.  You have some real skin in the game, so to speak.  Your integrity is on the line and you’re now accountable to somebody else … somebody you really, truly care about.

So go ahead Tiger.  Make a promise to your mother today.  That will provide some much-needed clarity about what you will and won’t do in the future.  As the Nike ad says:  Just Do It!
