"Make A Promise Day" — May 4th

May The Fourth Be With You!

Countdown to Make A Promise Day … Westchester County Executive, Robert Astorino, Proclaims May 4th To Be “Make A Promise Day”

Matthew Cossolotto, creator of “Make a Promise Day” (May 4th — May The Fourth Be With You!), welcomes the County Executive’s proclamation establishing May 4th as the “only unofficial ‘holiday’ dedicated to personal empowerment, goal achievement and integrity enhancement.”

Astorino’s action follows Yorktown Town Board’s adoption of a similar resolution in February

April 28, 2011 — Yorktown resident, author, and guest speaker Matthew Cossolotto, creator of “Make A Promise Day,” today applauded the proclamation issued by Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino.  This proclamation follows adoption by the Yorktown Town Board of a similar resolution on February 15, 2011.

“This proclamation by the Westchester County Executive underscores the power and the appeal of this Make A Promise idea,” said Matthew Cossolotto.  “I’m thrilled because it means people here in Westchester and beyond will learn about ‘Make A Promise Day’ and the power of making a promise.  And this builds momentum for other jurisdictions – like New York State and other states – to follow Westchester’s lead.  The more communities and states and countries we have embracing the ‘Make A Promise Day’ idea, the more this positive message about the unique power of making a promise will spread.  My mission is to share the power of making a promise with millions of people around the world.  And by doing so we’ll transform the world one person and one promise at a time.”

Following is the full text of the proclamation:

Office of the County Executive

Westchester County, New York

Proclamation

WHEREAS:  The Town Board of Yorktown, New York, unanimously adopted a resolution on February 15, 2011, proclaiming May 4, 2011 and each year thereafter to be MAKE A PROMISE DAY, and;

WHEREAS:  MAKE A PROMISE DAY is the only unofficial “holiday” dedicated to personal empowerment, goal achievement and integrity enhancement, and;

WHEREAS:  MAKE A PROMISE DAY encourages individuals to turn important goals into heartfelt promises, thereby increasing the probability of reaching those goals, and;

WHEREAS: Celebrating MAKE A PROMISE DAY will have the effect of enhancing accountability, personal responsibility and integrity, and;

The County Executive of Westchester County recognizes the value of highlighting the power of making and keeping promises on the part of local students, teachers, community organizations, businesses and political leaders;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROBERTASTORINO, COUNTY EXECUTIVE OF WESTCHESTER COUNTY, do hereby proclaim May 4, 2011 and each year thereafter to be MAKE A PROMISE DAY and encourage organizations and individual members of the community to celebrate this very important day in a manner they deem to be suitable and appropriate.

By way of background, Cossolotto made a promise to his mother on her deathbed that he would finish writing a book he had been discussing with her, get it published, and dedicate it to her memory. The resulting book, complete with Cossolotto’s dedication to his mother, is HabitForce! How to Kick the Habits of FAILURE and Adopt the Habits of SUCCESS. Signed copies of HabitForce! can be ordered via Cossolotto’s website: http://www.ThePodiumPro.com.

Cossolotto’s forthcoming book – The Power of Making a Promise – features a foreword by Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. In his foreword to Cossolotto’s book Canfield writes:

When Matthew first told me about the heartfelt promise he made to his mother and that he was launching a special day called “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th, I was hooked. You could say he had me at “I promise.”…

Contributing the foreword to this book and being associated with Matthew’s inspiring “Make-A-Promise” project is totally aligned with my life’s purpose. I applaud Matthew for collecting and celebrating these uplifting stories about promises made and promises kept.

John Assaraf, best-selling author of Having It All, wrote this about Cossolotto’s “Make A Promise” project: “I agree completely with that there is something uniquely powerful about making a promise that goes beyond traditional goal-setting.”

Here are a few prominent examples of the power of making a promise:

Nancy Brinker, author of Promise Me and founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, promised her sister and breast cancer victim Suzy that she would help find a cure.

Bill Clinton made a promise to Chelsea that he would watch his diet and take care of his health.

Oprah Winfrey made a promise to Nelson Mandela that she would build a school for girls in South Africa.

NBC’s Al Roker made a promise to his dying father that he would deal with his weight issues.

As a guest speaker, Cossolotto offers several Personal Empowerment Programs (PEPTalks) to a variety of audiences including schools and colleges, corporations, government agencies, and nonprofits. Here are the titles of his top three PEPTalks:

The Power of Making a Promise: Make A Promise. Keep Your Word. Change Your Life. Transform The World.

Today’s Brilliance from Matthew Cossolotto

Today’s Quote:  A promise is like a goal on steroids. Make a promise. Keep your word. Change your life. Transform the world. ~ Matthew Cossolotto

If today were my last day on Earth and I could share 500 words of brilliance with the world, here are the important things I’d want to pass along to others…

Turn important goals into heartfelt promises!

Some years ago, when I was thinking about writing a book about the seven habits of SUCCESS and FAILURE, I shared many of my ideas with my mother, Virginia Hope Butler. I explained the concepts and how I thought this book would provide a guide for people who felt stuck, disempowered, and unable to make positive changes. She encouraged me to complete the book.

The book was still unwritten when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. As her conditioned worsened, I decided to promise to her that I would finish the book, get it published, and dedicate it to her memory. We both fought back tears. I could see in her eyes that this promise meant a great deal to her. She smiled brightly despite the pain she was in and said: “You do that, Matthew. You do that.”

I’m proud to say I kept my promise. The resulting book, complete with a dedication to my mother’s memory, is HabitForce!

Countdown to “Make A Promise Day” (May 4th) … Matthew Cossolotto, Creator of Make A Promise Day, Calls Attention to Moving “I Promise” Video and Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign Honoring Anthony (Tony) McColl

In Tony’s honor, hundreds of students at DArcy McGee High School signed this “I Promise” t-shirt promising to never drink and drive or let friends drive under the influence.

McColl, 19, was killed on April 16th near Luskville, Quebec, by a drunk driver.  Turning this tragedy into a positive campaign to honor Tony and save lives, Tony’s friends created a moving “I Promise” video and launched a Facebook group called “Tony’s Promise.”

April 20, 2011 — Matthew Cossolotto, creator of Make A Promise Day (May 4th – May The Fourth Be With You!), today called attention to a moving “I Promise” video and anti-drunk driving campaign in honor of Anthony (Tony) McColl.  McColl was killed on April 16th by a drunk driver on Highway 148 near Luskville, Quebec (Canada).

“This ‘I Promise’ video tribute and the ‘Tony’s Promise’ campaign offer vivid testimony to the power of making a promise,” Cossolotto said.  “It’s an inspiring, healing, heart-centered power that can help turn a terrible tragedy into a positive campaign to save lives and restore hope.  I salute Tony’s friends for this heartfelt ‘I Promise’ initiative.  Those two words truly are magic words.  Publicly declaring ‘I Promise’ makes a world of difference.  I also want to express my deep condolences to Tony’s family and friends on their terrible loss.”

Tony’s friends created the powerful video and posted it on YouTube (see below).  The message on YouTube describing the video reads:

“A video made in tribute to Anthony McColl who’s innocent life was taken by a man driving under the influence who crashed head on into his car in the early hours of April 16th, 2011. In his memory, we would ask for you to join our facebook group ‘Tony’s Promise’ and pledge to never drive or let another person get behind the while whilst under the influence.”

The “Tony’s Promise” Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_205770589445576 has already attracted over 3,200 members in just a few days.  Here’s how the group is described:

“Tony’s Promise is a basic agreement that if you join this group, you will never allow a friend to drink and drive again. Too many of us watched it happen and shrugged it off, saying that they’d make it home fine. Hopefully a group like this would prevent any further avoidable accidents. No one needs to die like Anthony did.

Every promise made to Tony also goes out to each and every person who’s been affected by drinking and driving. Every kid, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, mother, father is encouraged to post the name of their loved ones who’ve been killed by impaired driving, and even make them their own promise page.”

Cossolotto knows about the power of making a promise from personal experience. He made a promise to his mother on her deathbed that he would finish writing a book he had been discussing with her, get it published, and dedicate it to her memory. The resulting book, complete with Cossolotto’s dedication to his mother, is HabitForce!

Motivated by that firsthand experience, Cossolotto launched the first annual “Make A Promise Day” last May 4th as part of his ongoing mission to share the power of making a promise with millions of people around the world. He’s writing a book about the power of making a promise with a foreword by Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. The book includes stories about people who have made and kept important promises in their lives.

To underscore the power of making a promise, Cossolotto cites several high-profile examples:

  • Oprah Winfrey made a promise to Nelson Mandela that she would build a school for girls in South Africa.
  • Entertainer Danny Thomas made a promise to build a shrine to St. Jude.  That promise led to the establishment of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
  • Nancy Brinker, author of Promise Me and founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, promised her sister and breast cancer victim Suzy that she would help find a cure.
  • Before his daughter’s wedding, former president Bill Clinton made a promise to Chelsea that he would watch his diet and take care of his health.

Countdown to “Make A Promise Day” (May 4th) … Matthew Cossolotto, Creator of Make A Promise Day, Will Conduct Executive Conversation Program for Human Capital Institute on April 29, 2011.

In an exclusive presentation for HCI’s executive members, Cossolotto will urge participants to go beyond traditional goal-setting by discussing how leaders can focus and align results with the power of promises.  As a special gift in the run-up to “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th, program participants will receive signed copies of Cossolotto’s groundbreaking book HabitForce!  All executive members will also receive a copy of Cossolotto’s new eBook:  A Promise A Day – 30 Days to a Promising Future.

April 19, 2011 — Matthew Cossolotto (aka The Podium Pro) announced today that he has been invited by the Human Capital Institute, the global association for strategic talent management, to conduct a seminar program for the organization’s executive members titled:  “Beyond traditional goal-setting—Focus and align results with a promise.”

This HCI presentation is a return appearance for Cossolotto.  The author of HabitForce! and All The World’s A Podium, Cossolotto conducted two executive conversation programs last year for HCI.  One program was titled “Supercharge Your HabitForce!” and the other was called “Energize Your PodiumPower!”

In an online message to executive members, HCI issued the follow announcement about Cossolotto’s April 29th program:

Beyond traditional goal-setting–Focus and align results with a promise

Making and keeping an important promise affects a leader personally as well as their followers. Stated in the form of a promise, an affirmation about attaining a goal helps to define a personal or organizational vision. Join our Executive Conversation to discover the power of making Personal Empowerment Promises (PEP) and put a “pep” talk in every promise. Share your promises with others and you’ll inspire your team, and align focus on results. All Executive Members who actively participate in the conversation will receive a signed copy of Matthew Cossolotto’s book, HabitForce! All Executive Members will also receive a copy of Matthew’s eBook, A Promise A Day – 30 Days to a Promising Future, in honor of “Make a Promise Day” on May 4th. Leaders, plan your promises now!

With his “A Promise A Day” eBook (available online by visiting http://www.ThePodiumPro.com), Cossolotto provides 30 personal empowerment promises for people to consider, including his “Top Ten Promises for a SUCCESSFUL Life.”  Here’s a short video of Cossolotto announcing the publication of “A Promise A Day.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXEeMIlRTb4

Cossolotto, a former aide to House Speaker Jim Wright and Congressman (now CIA Director) Leon Panetta, referred to his brand new eBook as a daily “Promise Dairy” that contains 30 Personal Empowerment Promises – or PEPs. Because of that acronym, Cossolotto says there’s “a PEP talk in every promise.”

Cossolotto says that his HCI program about the power of making promises will draw heavily from his recent article in the April issue of Personal Excellence magazine titled “A Good Pep Talk.”  (Visit http://www.LeaderExcel.com).  In the article, Cossolotto highlights this key personal empowerment idea:  The most powerful motivational speech in the world is what you say to yourself, not just once in awhile but on a regular, habitual basis.

In the article, Cossolotto cites Earl Nightingale’s observation in The Strangest Secret: “We become what we think about.”  Then Cossolotto writes:

“This profound truth has been recognized for ages.  Buddha said, ‘All that we are is the result of what we have thought.  The mind is everything.  What we think we become.’  The same idea can be found in the Bible: ‘As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he’ (Proverbs 23.7).”

Thus his article and his new eBook both emphasize the importance of giving ourselves regular “pep talks” in the form of positive affirmations and even personal empowerment promises.

How to Kick the Habits of FAILURE and Adopt the Habits of SUCCESS.

Here is a brief excerpt from Jack Canfield’s foreword to Cossolotto’s forthcoming book:

When Matthew first told me about the heartfelt promise he made to his mother and that he was launching a special day called “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th, I was hooked. You could say he had me at “I promise.”… Contributing the foreword to this book and being associated with Matthew’s inspiring “Make-A-Promise” project is totally aligned with my life’s purpose. http://www.JackCanfield.com

On February 15, 2011, the Yorktown, NY, town board became the first jurisdiction to adopt a resolution proclaiming May 4th to be “Make A Promise Day.” (See press release for details: http://prlog.org/11305930.)

To underscore the power of making a promise, Cossolotto cites several high-profile examples:

• Oprah Winfrey made a promise to Nelson Mandela that she would build a school for girls in South Africa.

Cossolotto invites people around the world to submit short summaries of their uplifting true stories of promises made and promises kept for possible inclusion in forthcoming books, presentations, and interviews. Send a few sentences describing your promise to: Matthew.Promises@Gmail.com.

Countdown To Make A Promise Day (May 4th) … Author and Speaker Stefania Lucchetti Shares The Promise She Made to Her Grandmother During What’s Your Promise? Interview with Matthew Cossolotto

Stefania Lucchetti talks about her promise to her grandmother

Author and guest speaker Matthew Cossolotto, creator of “Make A Promise Day” (May 4th — May The Fourth Be With You!), today announced that he has posted an inspiring “What’s Your Promise?” interview with leadership expert Stefania Lucchetti.  Release of the interview is part of the countdown to “Make A Promise Day” 2011.

Lucchetti is an internationally renowned expert on leadership, productivity and making ideas happen.  Her first book The Principle of Relevance has been defined “the message of the times.”  She regularly speaks for Fortune 500 companies and teaches courses on leadership and entrepreneurship.

During the interview, Lucchetti discussed the heartfelt promise she made to her grandmother.  After Lucchetti became a lawyer, her grandmother asked her not to forget that her real passions in life were to be a writer and a performer.  So Lucchetti promised her grandmother that she would pursue these two passions.

During the interview, Lucchetti expressed support for Make A Promise mission:  “This make a promise philosophy really resonates with me.  The promise I made to my grandmother was always there and I knew she would be happy that I kept my promise to her.”

Listen to the short interview (approximately 18 minutes) on YouTube:  http://youtu.be/mHeajeyyJTg.

Lucchetti is certainly not alone in supporting Cossolotto’s “Make A Promise” project.  The Town Board in Yorktown, New York, unanimously adopted a resolution on February 15, 2011, proclaiming May 4th to be “Make A Promise Day.”  Cossolotto is writing a book about the power of making a promise with a foreword by Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.  Here is a brief excerpt from Jack Canfield’s foreword to Cossolotto’s forthcoming book:

“When Matthew first told me about the heartfelt promise he made to his mother and that he was launching a special day called “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th, I was hooked. You could say he had me at “I promise.”… Contributing the foreword to this book and being associated with Matthew’s inspiring “Make-A-Promise” project is totally aligned with my life’s purpose.” http://www.JackCanfield.com

John Assaraf, best-selling author of Having It All, wrote this about Cossolotto’s “Make A Promise” project:  “I have spoken with Matthew about his project related to The Power of Making a Promise.  He told me about ‘Make A Promise Day‘ and his mission to highlight what he calls those two magic words:  ‘I Promise.’  I agree completely with him that there is something uniquely powerful about making a promise that goes beyond traditional goal-setting… Put simply, Matthew’s project is very promising indeed!”  http://www.JohnAssaraf.com

Author and publisher Rick Frishman wrote this about “Make A Promise Day”:   “Happy ‘Make A Promise Day’ everybody! I really like Matthew’s idea.  The power of making a promise to someone you care about really can change your life.  Great work Matthew … May The Fourth Be With You!”  http://www.RickFrishman.com.

During her own “What’s Your Promise?” interview (to be released soon), Gail Lynne Goodwin, founder of http://www.InspireMeToday.com, said this about Cossolotto’s “Make A Promise” mission:  “You’re onto something big here.  Because when we make a promise we put our word on the line and we have to step up for it… I commend you on the word you’re doing.  It’s an inspiration to me.”

In the run-up to “Make A Promise Day” 2011, Cossolotto is asking supporters to spread the word about “Make A Promise Day” to jurisdictions across the U.S. and around the world.  He encourages people to urge appropriate authorities in their town, city, county, state (or province) and country to adopt a “Make A Promise Day” Proclamation similar to the one passed by the Yorktown, New York, Town Board.  See earlier press release (http://prlog.org/11399160) with the proposed text of a resolution that could be adapted and adopted by appropriate authorities in jurisdictions around the world.

To underscore the power of making a promise, Cossolotto cites several high-profile examples:

•   Kody Bateman, CEO of Send Out Cards, made a promise to his departed brother (and himself) that he would act on his promptings and find a way to help others do the same.  He founded Send Out Cards as a result of this heartfelt promise.

Countdown to Make A Promise Day May 4th … Matthew Cossolotto’s “What’s Your Promise?” Interview With Chris Cade, Founder of World’s #1 Spiritual Story Website

In this 20-minute, edited version of a much longer interview, Chris Cade discusses the heartfelt promise he made on the birth of his son.  The interview is being released as part of the countdown to “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th 2011.

April 11, 2011 — Author and guest speaker Matthew Cossolotto, creator of “Make A Promise Day” (May 4th — May The Fourth Be With You!), today announced the release of an inspiring 20-minute “What’s Your Promise?” interview with Chris Cade, founder of the #1 spiritual story website on the Internet.  Release of the interview is part of the countdown to “Make A Promise Day” 2011.

In the interview, Cade reveals the heartfelt, life-changing promise he made on the birth of his son.  As Cade described it:  “The promise was to devote myself to my son, to really be there, to keep him at the center of my life.”

Since he made that promise, Cade realized that keeping his word would have serious implications for Cade’s career decisions and, after a divorce, even his decisions about where to live.  Keeping this promise led to Cade’s decision to move from Oregon to Texas so he could remain geographically close to his son.

During the interview, Cossolotto shared a similar story about the promise John Assraraf made to his two sons.  Cossolotto interviewed Assaraf for his forthcoming book about the power of making a promise.

Listen to this edited version of Chris Cade’s “What’s Your Promise?” interview on YouTube:  http://youtu.be/6ZzMtlVqR_0

During the lively interview, Cade expressed his strong support for Matthew Cossolotto’s mission to share the power of making a promise with millions of people around the world.  After the interview, Cade provided this testimonial about Cossolotto’s “Make A Promise” mission:

“Matthew, I really like the idea for your book — The Power of Making a Promise.  It resonates strongly with the messages I give to the world. A promise isn’t words, and it’s not just actions.  A promise is both of those things WITH the heart behind them. It’s that feeling inside that says, ‘I’m committed to this unquestionably.’ And that’s a feeling people KNOW when they connect with a person who has the personal power to make and keep promises.  Not just empty promises, but the kinds of promises that matter.”

Chris Cade is not alone in voicing support for the Make A Promise concept including “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th.

Popular TV personality Todd Newton said the following during his “What’s Your Promise?” interview:  “I think what you’re doing is fantastic.  And I can’t thank you enough for reaching out to me and allowing me to be a part of this.  And I look forward to supporting your ‘Make A Promise Day’ in May and being a part of this great campaign as it grows, and grows, and grows.”

Cossolotto’s forthcoming book about the power of making a promise will feature a foreword by Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Here is a brief excerpt from Jack Canfield’s foreword:  “When Matthew first told me about the heartfelt promise he made to his mother and that he was launching a special day called “Make A Promise Day” on May 4th, I was hooked. You could say he had me at “I promise.”… Contributing the foreword to this book and being associated with Matthew’s inspiring “Make-A-Promise” project is totally aligned with my life’s purpose.” http://www.JackCanfield.com

In addition, the Town Board in Yorktown, New York, unanimously adopted a resolution on February 15, 2011, proclaiming May 4th to be “Make A Promise Day.”  In the run-up to “Make A Promise Day” 2011, Cossolotto is asking supporters to spread the word about “Make A Promise Day” to jurisdictions across the U.S. and around the world.  He encourages people to urge appropriate authorities in their town, city, county, state (or province) and country to adopt a “Make A Promise Day” Proclamation similar to the one passed by the Yorktown, New York, Town Board.  See an earlier press release (http://prlog.org/11399160) with the proposed text of a resolution that could be adapted and adopted by appropriate authorities in jurisdictions around the world.
